Peter W. Higgs i François Englert han guanyat el Premi Nobel de Física 2013 per la seva contribució al desenvolupament teòric del mecanisme de generació de massa que explica l'origen de la massa de les partícules elementals, i que recentment s'ha confirmat experimentalment al LHC del CERN amb la detecció del bosó de Higgs.

El bosó de Higgs és conegut com La Partícula de Deu, nom proposat per Leon M. Lederman (Premi Nobel de Física l'any 1988) en el llibre de divulgació científica titulat "The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question?". Lederman explica que li va posar aquest nom perquè
" ... is so central to the state of physics today, so crucial to our final understanding of the structure of matter, yet so elusive, that I have given it a nickname: the God Particle. Why God Particle? Two reasons. One, the publisher wouldn't let us call it the Goddamn Particle [1], though that might be a more appropriate title, given its villainous nature and the expense it is causing. And two, there is a connection, of sorts, to another book, a much older one [2].
